It seems everyone wants a piece of Paris-Dakar glamour these days. And few bikes hanker after it as much as BMWâs new, Dakar-styled dual-purpose F650. Gelaende âoff road, streetâ â and when it was launched in 2000, the F650 was acclaimed as the worldâs most technologically advanced single.
The average single-cylinder dual sport bike has a seat height of around 34.7 inches. With a seat height of 37.2 inches, the KTM 640 Adventure is the tallest dual sport bike, while the BMW F 650 Funduro has the lowest seat height of only 31.9 inches. Its not a standard upgrade from BMW for the 650. RevJVegas #1906; AFAIK (at least here in Europe) there is no factory alarm. My alarm was fitted by the BMW dealer as a dealer-fiited option. Is there a brand name on the key fob? Or can you see what brand it is from the 'alarm body' - mine was installed under the seat where the toolkit normally goes.
Some say the F650 (carburetted) is easier to work on in the wilderness ('cos its got a carb), but equally the more complex F650GS bikes are surviving world tours. The F650GS gives slightly better fuel economy, say 70mpg against 50-55mpg-ish for the F650, but basically that's about it as far as useability goes.
The name said it all. The first of the BMW F Series motorcycles was called the F650 âFunduro.â That was 1997, and a whole new type of Beemer was revealed to the world. Instead of BMWâs traditional driveshaft, these were chain or belt driven. They were also smaller, simpler, lighter, nimbler, economical, functional, and⌠FUN.
Once again BMW have considered seat height, which is a lowly 780mm (30.7in) and there's an even lower option seat unit at 750mm (29.5in) for the vertically challenged. The fuel tank though slightly smaller at 15 litre (3.3 gal) is in the same place as the F650GS off-roader, and hidden beneath the seat to keep the centre of gravity down low.
